Sapona Green Building Center is the only place I know of in the Wilmington area where a wide range of green products are on display for clients and professionals to see and touch. It's one thing to see a product online or in a magazine, and quite another to see it in person and touch it with your hands. As we are still rather early in the green building movement, Sapona helps people become familiar and comfortable with products that are good both for human health and the health of the environment. In addition, the free seminars given each month at Sapona feature professionals who have experience using the products in the store. This gives further credibility to green products and encourages people about making green decisions in their own projects.

Dear Elaine and Matt,
            Michelle and I are delighted to report that we have been comfortably situated in our new (-old) house for several months now.  The renovation was arduous but worth the wait. 
We wanted to thank you for helping us with many of our “green” choices –particularly the bamboo counter tops.  For years, we have renovated homes with recycled products, but this project marks the first time that we have gone “bamboo”. 
We were immediately drawn to the product for the obvious reasons –fast growth tree/sustainability of forests, 20% harder than maple, and less expensive than granite.  Yet, we did not consider the look or maintenance of these bamboo slabs until they were before us. 
The installation was not difficult.  The exercise took me less than a week from beginning to end; of course, much of that time elapsed while the tung oil was soaking into the planks.  I made all of my cuts/dry-fits first and then coated every square inch of both sides of every piece five times.  I’d have coated the pieces ten times, but I was anxious to finish so we could move in our house.  We particularly loved the way the oil brought out the shine in the bamboo and couldn’t wait to be serving breakfast atop the sinewy-fibrous grains.
Our new countertops are easy to clean with mild soap and water.  Since there are no veneers to iron-on, we never worry about chipped pieces or superficial damages to the surface.  Our plan is to periodically prepare the product with mineral spirits before oiling.  This exercise is simply to keep the bamboo from drying out –a small price to pay for countertops we expect to have forever.

We recently had Marmoleum floor tiles with welding rods installed in our bathroom. Sapona offered a large variety of in store samples to choose from, helped us learn about the product and most importantly handled the entire process from purchase to installation. Installation was complete in one day and the installer Sapona sent on the job handled the difficult task of applying the welding rods smoothly and efficiently. Speaking of the product itself, Marmoleum has a natural feel and texture to it. It has a soft, warm feel under our feet as opposed to what we would expect from a cold ceramic floor. It is also surprisingly affordable, which is obviously a major plus.

I wanted to let you know how wonderful it is to have a local store where you can buy safe, non-toxic paint and building supplies. As parents of a child that a few years ago was very sick from environmental chemical exposures, we discovered that creating a chemical free home was critical to her recovery and future health. It is important to us to use paints that are no VOC when adding color in our home. We had heard about Low VOC paint, but did not know where to get it. I had a particular color that I had used in my last house that I really wanted to use again. I was very pleased to find Sapona in Wilmington. They were able to do an exact match of the paint swatch in no time at all. The paint cost about the same, applied the same, and looks the same as traditional products.  However, it gives me peace of mind to know that it is better for my family and for the environment. "The Flor tiles give our dining room a standard low shag carpet look but are much easier to clean and don't have a chemical odor." The Flor carpet tiles are easy to lay down.  It is important to read the directions and then decide what works best based on your floor size and how the doors are set up in the room.  The squares were also 2 inches different from what the catalogue size was so we almost didn't have enough since you need to cut some of them to fit your needs. They are easy to cut once you measure them and the markings on the backside make it easy to confirm they are facing the right way (the shag "looks" the same but there is a slight difference once all laid out).

When we decided to re-paint several rooms in our house, including our two-year-old daughter's room, it was a relief to have access to a local store that sold non-toxic, low-VOC paint.  Sapona was easily able to mix the colors of paint that we requested with the price being the about same as other tinted paints.  Wilmington is fortunate to have a store like Sapona that focuses on being entirely environmentally conscience while still providing you with exactly what you want.

We were very pleased with the quality and finish of Safecoat paint.  It looks fantastic, and Sapona easily matched a color chip from another paint line to get the exact hue that we wanted.  When my husband painted our nursery, I was amazed that I didn't smell any paint fumes when I walked into the house.  It was well worth the money to know that this paint was not harmful to our household and environmentally friendly.

We used the stain and the paint:) The stain has great coverage, no odor and is very easy to use!  The sealer added a nice protective layer without the harsh chemical odors as well!  I really enjoyed using these products and can't wait for more projects that require staining.  Whereas before I dreaded them!  Wow, amazing products!
